The Process
Precious metals remain with the ash while the burner exhaust is treated. The oxidation system has multiple stages of scrubbing for mercury removal from the exhaust gas.
Carbon Incineration Flow
- FeedFeed to the carbon burner arrives in bulk bags. The bags are hoisted by crane and trolley to a bag dump station, and the feeder is kept full at all times.
- Carbon BurnerA fluidized bed reactor and the heart of the process. Carbon burns as it enters, leaving non-combustible ash behind; the heavier fraction stays in the bed as a heat sink and temperature moderator, while lighter ash is carried out with the exhaust gas.
- Gas CoolingThe cyclone overflow contains most of the mercury and a minimal amount of precious metals. Off gases are cooled to less than 250°F with a water-cooled heat exchanger.

The oxidation system has multiple stages of scrubbing for mercury removal from the exhaust gas, in full compliance with EPA, State of Nevada, Washoe County and City of Sparks regulations.
