Preparation and Treatment
When it comes to the disposal of carbon and the domestic or transboundary shipping of spent carbon, a fundamental difference exists between activated carbon used to remove toxic and hazardous elements from gases and solutions for pollution control, and the activated carbon used in the mining industry to recover gold and silver from mined ore. We handle the latter.
On receipt, a JRI Consignment Note is issued and every bag is labeled for identification. The customer or their representative is contacted to confirm receipt and to schedule a date for weighing and sampling.
The Sampling Sequence

Each super sack is lifted from the pallet and placed on a JRI certificated scale, in the presence of a designated representative of the customer, to determine a net weight.

Every sack in the batch is auger sampled — nine to twelve holes per sack, with the auger reaching the bottom. One gram is taken per pound of net weight.

The weighed samples go into the mixer together and are blended for twenty minutes, then poured out into sample buckets.

Where moisture is excessive the sample is cut by cone and quartering on a rubber mat; otherwise it passes through a riffle splitter.

The sample is cut down to six to eight equal splits — one customer, one JRI, one umpire, three to five reserve — each bagged, sealed and labeled with the corresponding JRI number and material type.
Mercury Monitoring
Just Refiners has carried out extensive research and monitoring on spent carbon with various levels of mercury. Every stage of the carbon treatment plant is monitored, and the laboratory analyst takes vapor samples at random. Each reading is recorded and filed for due diligence and control purposes. At no stage has any high level of mercury been detected throughout the process.
